The Freebie (Part 2)

[Continued from "The Freebie (Part 1)."]

* * SPOILER ALERT * *

Truthfully, since the movie itself leaves questions unanswered, knowing what happens next won’t ruin a viewing, but if you’re the type who likes to be surprised don’t read any more.

He hooks up with a chick who works at the coffee place he and his wife frequent.  I thought that was a bad idea because it could prove to be awkward later when he and his wife want coffee.  If you’re going to fuck someone not your spouse, do it outside your group of friends, and group of merchants.  I understand this can be difficult for a guy whose chances of being able to pick up a random stranger at a bar aren’t as good as a woman’s, but he should have tried anyway.

She goes the random stranger at a bar route.  The bartender, because he’s a good listener.  And because he has all that booze.  Bartenders are always getting laid out of their leagues because the booze makes them that much more attractive.  The movie didn’t go into it, but if the bar was a place where she and her husband went together, then I’d say the bartender would also have been a bad idea.

When they did all their talking about the rules and they both agreed that the one night stand was a freebie – meaning it didn’t “count” – he lied.  Probably not maliciously because he didn’t know how he’d feel after it happened, but he lied nonetheless.  He lied when he said he’d be ok knowing she fucked someone else.  He should have done a lot less talking to her about their rules and a lot more self-reflection, because then he might have realized that he was very much not ok with the knowledge that his wife fucked someone else.

He wasn’t ok with the knowledge that his wife was out all night even though they had agreed that they had all night to do whatever each of them wanted.  Knowing only that she had been out all night, not whether she had had sex with anyone, he had trouble looking at her and wouldn’t have a conversation with her.

That’s not a freebie, dude, that’s an excuse for you to be a passive-aggressive shit.  This hit close to home for me because my entire marriage was spent with a guy who claimed he was over me cheating who most definitely was not.  For seven years I was treated like shit – passively; there was no violence and barely a raised voice – as punishment for something I was told was forgiven.

When she tells him that she fucked a bartender in a bathroom, it’s abundantly clear that his little brain can’t handle the idea of any penises in his wife.  Not his own, since he wasn’t fucking her anyway, and not someone who was willing to fuck her.  He pulls the slut card.  What a dick.  She’s a slut for doing what they had agreed was ok for each of them to do?!

Apparently she’s a slut because he didn’t fuck the chick who works at the coffee place.  The Viking found this very hard to believe because the coffee chick claimed that every part of her smelled of coffee.  A woman whose pussy smells of coffee?  He’d so be in.  The husband’s reason for not fucking the coffee chick: Because he loved his wife too much to go through with it.

What utter bullshit.  So for him the night wasn’t a freebie, but a test of love?  Perhaps he should have told his wife the truth rather than agreeing to their plan.  He loves his wife so much he won’t fuck anyone else, or even her.  It’s a pure love, like that of a nun for Jesus, sexless.

She tells him that she didn’t really fuck the bartender, that she just said that because she thought he had fucked the coffee chick.  Sorry, lady, it’s too late.  Even if he says he believes you, he won’t, and even if he says everything is fine, it’s not.  The relationship is over.  It may not end for several years, but it is over.

I’m not on the woman’s side because she’s a woman, I’m on her side because she was honest.  He was not.  If he couldn’t handle the idea of his wife having sex then he shouldn’t have agreed to the plan.

Overall a good movie that’s available on Netflix to watch instantly.  Sadly, I think it’s realistic.  I’m so glad I’m not married any more.

I swear.  True story.
